Why do I need business funding?

Does your business need more money than you can put into it?

Even if you have a brilliant idea, a good business plan and a sound business model, without sufficient money to implement them, you would not be able to reap any benefits. At the start-up stage, you can get small business funding, which will help you to make a good start.

Even if you have set up a small business, you may need funds to boost growth. Every stage of significant growth comes from substantial investments into the business. With sufficient financing, you may be able to grow your business manifold in a short span of time.

How difficult is securing business funding?

It is not difficult. While you are looking for small business funding, there are investors seeking good business ideas to finance. Raising money is not difficult, but you need to know how to position your plan and how to sell your idea.

If you already have an established business, albeit a small one, you are at an advantage! You have proved yourself and your business model. Now all you need is funds to propel growth.

Where do I look for small business funding?

There are several sources of small business funding.

If you are just starting out, you can aim to get seed financing or angel financing. Seed financing is obtained from people you already know – friends and family. Angel financing is offered by a trust, a person or an organisation (known as a business angel) that specialises in providing business funding.

If your organisation has been in business for some time, you can aim for venture capital, debt funding, grant funding, asset financing, trade financing, property financing and other tools that can help you accelerate your business growth.

Do I need help seeking small business funding?

Yes! Even if you are seeking seed financing, it is a good idea to get professional help for creating your business model and positioning your plan before you approach anyone. If you are considering targeting angel financing or any other form of funding:

  • Be prepared to face stiff competition. Remember, there are a lot of small businesses seeking funds for growth. You have to be able to impress and excite the people who will make the decision regarding whether or not to offer you business funding.
  • Remember the investor is taking on an extremely high risk. So you would have to prove that your business is capable of generating a high return on investment.
  • Different investors fund businesses in different industries. So, if yours is an Internet-based business, you may target different investors than if your business is manufacturing auto parts. You need help identifying which investors to target.
  • You will not get financing from the first investor you talk to. You need to approach a number of investors to hope for any success in small business funding. A professional firm would be able to put you in touch with a large number of investors.
